What is therapeutic yoga?

My practice uses the principles and movements of yoga to recognize habitual movement patterns, quiet compensating movements, and discover movement that is easy and functional. Most of us have some kind of compensation pattern, and they develop to help us as we heal from injury, recover from surgery, or use repetitive movements in work, sport, or play. Over time, these compensations can lead to tension, disrupted breathing patterns, and even chronic pain. With attention, awareness, and careful guidance, we unwind these compensations and return the body to a more balanced state. Once we’ve re-patterned movement, we begin to build resilience by slowly adding load and intensity to your program. This work allows you to improve function, performance, and yes, even reduce or eliminate pain.

I started teaching yoga postures to people living with chronic pain several years ago. I saw positive results as my students learned to move more efficiently and trust their bodies again. Many students experienced some reduction in pain, but I knew that more was possible. I continued to study and found experts in the field of yoga, physical therapy, and movement science, and discovered a method and approach that allows me to put my years of yoga training, my in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology, and my love of teaching movement to even better use. I’ve been working with patients one-on-one since 2021, and they are seeing great results.

As the years of wear and tear build I’ve sought varying avenues to prolong good health or reverse negative health. With all the different therapies, I’ve gotten good (but temporary) results and was really looking for a therapy that I could implement more on my own. The work with Amy in our Therapeutic Yoga sessions has really given me a lot of awareness along with tools to navigate better balance and symmetry. Amy has a heart for helping people reach their health goals and I look forward to every session!

Yoga

I’ve been practicing yoga for more than twenty years and teaching since 2005. These teachings have helped me find balance and stability in my body, my life, my relationships, and my work. As a teacher, I love the moment a student discovers a new connection with their body. There may be a look of surprise, a quick intake of breath, or simply a release of tension that allows them to breathe with more ease and settle into a posture. It’s a beautiful thing to witness, and it’s an experience that I know to be available to everyone and every body.

Since working with Amy I feel less crooked. I am able to ride in the car without pain, and my back hurts less. I am able to ride my horse without rib or back pain. I feel my balance is improving. I am very happy with these results. I was beginning to wonder if I would feel strong again, and know I am on the way.
